Abraham "Abe" Jay-Jedediah Simpson II, även känd som "Farfar Simpson" är far till Homer Simpson, Herbert Powell och troligen Abbie och farfar till Bart, Lisa , och Maggie Simpson.

Nästan alla uppgifter om han har lämnat av hans själv. Många av hans historier verkar vara felaktiga, ofta fysiskt eller historiskt omöjlig, och ibland oförenliga med varandra, vilket tyder på att Abe är senil. Därför ska all information tas med en nypa salt. Han är en medlem av stenhuggarna, frimurarna, kommunisterna samt är ordförande för en gay och lesbisk klubb. Dessutom lider han från sporadiska narkoleptiska attacker.

"Behind the Laughter" är avsnitt 22 och det sista från säsong 11. Avsnittet sändes på Fox den 21 maj 2000. Avsnittet är en parodi på TV-serien Behind the Music på VH1. I avsnittet poträtteras familjen Simpson som skådespelare i en sitcom, och deras liv. I berättarformat visas historien om Simpsons.

Avsnittet regisserades av Mark Kirkland och skrevs av Tim Long, George Meyer, Mike Scully och Matt Selman. Idén till avsnittet föddes av Long. VH1 och producenterna bakom Behind the Music tillät serien att använda samma grafik. Jim Forbes är berättarrösten i avsnittet och Willie Nelson gästskådespelar som sig själv. Marcia Wallace gästskådespelade som Edna Krabappel. Gary Coleman och Stephen Hawking medverkar som sig själva genom arkivmaterial men är ändå krediterad för avsnittet.
